| Quick Answer
From the first consultation to a finished kitchen, a custom cabinet project can take several weeks, while semi-custom cabinets are often completed on a shorter timeline. Manufacturing is usually the longest single stage and is not easy to compress. Design, measurements, material selection, and final approvals happen earlier in the process and are the stages where homeowners have the most control over the schedule.

Two things about that table are worth noticing. First, the countertop cannot be templated until the cabinets are physically installed, so it is a sequential stage rather than a parallel one this surprises people and it is the reason the kitchen is not finished the day the cabinets go in. Second, the stages you control add up to more time than the stages we control.
Why semi-custom is faster
Semi-custom cabinets are built in standard sizes from an established set, so the manufacturer is running a known configuration. Fully custom cabinets are drawn, engineered and built for your specific dimensions, which adds both engineering time at the front and manufacturing time in the middle.
If your kitchen has standard dimensions and no unusual angles, semi-custom will get you the same result sooner and for less. Fully custom earns its longer lead time where the room genuinely demands it odd angles, unusual ceiling heights, non-standard runs, or original millwork that has to be matched.
What actually causes delay, in order of frequency
- Selection indecision. The single largest cause. Finish and hardware choices left open hold the entire order, and a week of deliberation at the selection stage is a week added to the finish date.
- Layout changes after the order is placed. Once cabinets are in manufacture, a layout change generally means starting that section again.
- Appliance specifications confirmed late. Cabinet runs are built around appliance dimensions. A refrigerator swapped for a wider model after the order means the run has to change.
- Site conditions found at installation. Out-of-square walls, unexpected plumbing, insufficient blocking. Common in pre-1980 homes and largely avoidable with a proper site measure.
- Damage in transit. Infrequent, but when a door or panel arrives damaged the replacement runs on the manufacturer’s schedule, not ours. This is why we inspect on delivery rather than at installation.
- Finish availability. Custom colour matching and certain specialty finishes carry longer lead times than standard options. We will tell you this at selection, not afterwards.
How to make your project go faster
- Confirm your appliances before the design stage, not after. Model numbers, not categories.
- Bring your inspiration images to the first appointment. Narrowing the aesthetic early removes weeks later.
- Make the finish decision in the showroom rather than taking samples home indefinitely. Samples viewed at home under different lighting are useful once; after that they extend the timeline without improving the decision.
- Sign off the drawings promptly. The manufacturing slot is allocated on sign-off, and a two-day delay in signing can cost considerably more than two days in the queue.
- Decide on internal fittings at order stage. Pull-outs and organisers added later cost more and arrive separately.
- If you are also doing flooring or electrical, coordinate the sequence with us early — the order in which trades work matters.
What we will tell you at the first appointment
You will get a realistic date at the first consultation, not a best case. If the timeline does not work for a deadline you have a family event, a house sale, a baby due say so at the first meeting. Sometimes we can work to it by choosing a shorter-lead-time line or a stock finish. Sometimes we cannot, and it is better to know that at the start than six weeks in.
FAQ
How long do custom kitchen cabinets take from order to installation?
Semi-custom kitchen cabinets generally have a shorter lead time than fully custom cabinets, while fully custom projects can take longer because each cabinet is built to specific dimensions and requirements. Manufacturing is usually the longest single stage of the process, followed by delivery and installation. The exact timeline can vary based on the cabinet manufacturer, project complexity, material selections, and current production schedules.
Why do fully custom cabinets take longer than semi-custom?
Semi-custom cabinets are built in standard sizes from an established range, so the manufacturer is running a known configuration. Fully custom cabinets are drawn and engineered for your specific dimensions, adding both engineering time before manufacture and build time during it.
Can my countertop be installed at the same time as the cabinets?
No. The countertop is templated after the cabinets are physically installed and level, then fabricated and fitted. This is a sequential stage, which is why the kitchen is not finished on the day the cabinets go in.
What is the most common cause of cabinet project delays?
Selection indecision. Finish and hardware choices left open hold the whole order, and time lost at the selection stage moves the finish date day for day. Layout changes after the order is placed are the second most common cause.
Can I speed up my cabinet order?
To a degree. Confirming appliance model numbers early, making the finish decision in the showroom, and signing off drawings promptly all remove time. Manufacturing itself cannot be compressed, though choosing a shorter-lead-time line or a stock finish can shorten it.
How long will my kitchen be unusable?
For a full replacement, roughly from cabinet removal to countertop installation. Refacing is very different the kitchen stays broadly usable throughout, which is one of the main reasons people choose it.
